After 20 years in NYC production, one thing’s become obvious: the people who stay valuable are the ones who adapt early and build systems instead of just reacting to problems. The combination of small-batch manufacturing, lightweight automation, and emerging AI tools has completely changed how fast small teams can move when the tech is implemented with real operational knowledge behind it.
You don’t need to be a full-time engineer to benefit from it either — understanding workflows, infrastructure, and how different tools connect is often more important than writing any code…but when production experience is paired with practical technology adoption, you create scalable processes, reduce repetitive work, and free up more time for creative and strategic decision-making.
THE PASSION_
Adriaan Doering-Dorival has been exploring his abstract artistic practice under the moniker MOONBASE since 2016; and ever since has looked to combine his passions for art and fabrication in specific-value markets. Through fabrication, he has installed artist’s work everywhere from high rise residential to basement events, all the way to Orchard Beach. He is a proud generalist whose multi-disciplinary mastery opens up new possibilities in workflows. After deciding to pivot away from traditional production in 2023 for more of a creative-centered focus, he has been steadily mixing new and old-world concepts to bolster productivity, flatten hurdles, and return ‘craft’ at the fore of the term craftsmanship.
